In the month of April of 2000, Tom Delay, conservative congressman from southeast Texas, made the comment that "Janet Reno's order to use force to take Elian Gonzales from his Miami relatives was a first. Never before in America had a law enforcement agency, without a warrant, forcibly entered an American home." Response: It is quite obvious that Tom Delay comes from a district where few Hispanics or African-American reside. The civil rights of many minority groups have been consistently violated by law enforcement agencies on a regular basis. I guess Delay has never heard of the incident with Fred Hampton in 1969 or the incident with Pedro Oregon in Houston, Texas in 1999, where in both cases, the civil rights of both victims where violated. And trust me, there are many more cases. I guess what Delay was trying to say is that if you don't have political influence, such as the case with the Cuban-Americans, you are irrelevant. Tom Delay should open his eyes and see the injustices in this country. Compared to other minority groups, the Cuban-Americans have gotten off rather lightly.
